unexpected emergency PostPosted: Tue Dec 01, 2009 10:31 pm

boy i tell ya, last sunday i had an engine er, motor failure with the 58D. i knew i would never auto this machine on a rgular basis because at 15 lbs, its heavy. i have even tried a hovering auto or two and it wasnt pretty. though the 610mm blades i am using are great for stability with their heavy weight, the fuselage's weight outweighs their ability to cushion a fast descent.........or so i thought. after taking off i climbed to altitude then made my 180 degree turn back to me and all went quiet (well quieter) unfortunately my cameraman stopped recording and missed the money shot of a touchdown but i am happy to report there was no damage as the landing couldnt have been more perfect.  those blades had more cushion than i thought. course it helps to do a run on auto like i did.
turns out the motor mounting screws came loose allowing the motor to shift its position and run against the sideframes and also cutting one of the lead wires causing a motor failure. i always said its a good idea to set your machine up for autos even if you arent capable of doing one or plan on doing one with the machine.

That almost was my feeling this morning. My TRex 600 went down hard. Looks like I lost signal. Motor went off in middle of a roll. I tried to get some more negative pitch in order to keep head speed up (did so a few times with the 700 and always landed save).
Not the 600. It simply did not responde at all. Went down hard. So I concider myself lucky since lonly the landing gear and the main blades took a hit. It will fly on New Years day again.  Mr. Green
Still watching it - my thought simply was - lets see what damage I have to deal with and how long the bird will be off the sky.  Wink
